Clean Beauty for Summertime Weddings

Summertime and wedding season are synonymous in New England. I love any excuse to get dressed up, and a wedding is a perfect occasion to do so.

However, my makeup bag needed it’s own mini-makeover. I’ve been cleaning up my skincare routine, but my clean beauty journey has barely begun. I am partnering with Follain, one of my favorite shops in Boston, to get this process jump started just in time to look my wedding-guest-best.

Here are my favorite picks… clean beauty follain

Orgaid Vitamin C & Revitalizing Organic Sheet Mask

Good makeup starts with good skin! Prep for the big day by kicking your feet up, putting on this mask, and relaxing while the Vitamin C-rich sheet mask does it’s work. Vitamin C helps to brighten and even out skin tone. It also has hyaluronic acid for plumping hydration.

Jane Iredale Mascara (in black)

I got this mascara in black, and thought that it looked really subtle. If you prefer an extremely natural look, this is also available in grey and brown. I also want to try this paired with the Jane Iredale conditioner for an even more pumped up lash look. (I haven’t tested this out against crying, so let me know if it holds up to a father-daughter dance.)

Ilia Pure Eyeliner (in Havana Affair)

I’ve been an eyeliner girl since I started wearing makeup. I usually wear liquid liner, but I figured that this old dog can learn new tricks. It is smooth and easy to apply, so consider me converted. Best part is that this eyeliner contains castor seed oil, which targets free radicals aka helps to prevent premature aging. I don’t mind smile/laugh lines but might as well keep signs of aging when you can.

Ilia Moondance Radiance Translucent Powder SPF 20

My fave fave of the bunch. Obviously, everyone knows that sunscreen is really important. Slathering on traditional creamy sunscreen on your face may feel more beach-y than wedding-ready. This portable powder can be used to keep excess oil in check as well as you from harmful UV rays. It also has a very subtle shimmer, which reads more “radiant beauty” than “preteen discovering glitter.” Serious hero product.

Hurraw! Moon Balm

Last but not least, the humble lip balm. Don’t pass this over thinking it’s just a standard old balm. Coconut butter plus a blend of avocado, coconut and jojoba oils, this packs some cray hydration but also feels really nice on your lips.Slather it on when you’re getting ready, slather it on at night. Your lips will be freakin’ smooth as buttah.

Tell me- have you incorporated clean beauty items into your makeup routine? Let me know what I should try next!

This post was in partnership with Follain. All opinions are my own. I’ve been a long-time customer of Follain, and I am happy to get a chance to work with a company that I whole-heartedly support. Read more about how they choose their products here.

Favorite Sephora Buys

sephora

I buy most of my beauty and skincare items at Sephora. They carry a huge variety of products, and I enjoy discovering new things in-store. They’re having a storewide sale right now, so I put together a list of some of my favorite products. The sale ends today for Beauty Insiders (free to sign up!), and tomorrow for VIB and Rouge level customers.

Hair

Living Proof shampoo and conditioner: I buy this in the big bottles. The restore line is great for my hair. I put my strands through a ton of abuse, and this helps to bring back the hair’s strength and shine.

Makeup

Lancome Artliner: I have been a loyal Lancome eyeliner girl since high school. I love liquid liner, and this is one of the best I’ve tried. I love how easily it glides on, with none of the tugging at your eyelid that you find with a pencil liner. Sephora used to carry more colors, but they’ve streamlined their offering to only the black.

Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real! Lengthening & Volumizing Mascara: I love long lashes and this mascara gets the job done every time.

Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real! Tinted Lash Primer: If you think this is an unnecessary step/product, let me just tell you that the other day, two people asked me where I get my eyelashes done. No ladies, these puppers are my own lashes. This product can also be worn alone for subtle lash definition.

Hourglass Ambient® Strobe Lighting Blush: I got this blush recently and love it.

Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain: This stuff does not budge. I can put this on, and hours later it still looks great. I have colors 01, 03, and 18. They’re all have a matte finish that doesnt make your lips feel like a desert.

Skin

Origins GinZing Energy-Boosting Moisturizer: Origins is a great  brand, nd I use a ton of their product. This lightweight gel moisturizer is one of the products that got me hooked on their brand. The scent is light yet energizing, and it absorbs quickly. Love this stuff!

Clarins Sunscreen Multi-Protection Broad Spectrum SPF 50: I started using retinol, so sun protection is even more important than ever. This sunscreen wears well under makeup, which makes it a great every day choice. It’s pricey, but the bottle lasts a while.

GlamGlow face masks: My favorite two are the ThirstyMud Hydrating Treatment and PowerMud Dualcleanse Treatment.

Murad Rapid Relief Acne Spot Treatment: Zits. We all get them, we all want them to go away fast. This product works really quickly. I’ll dab it on when I go to bed, and by the morning, there is a noticeable reduction.

Sheet masks! I love trying new ones and restocking on old faves.

Beauty Insiders- don’t forget to use code BISPRING by 4/23 to save 10%. If you’re a VIB or Rouge, use code VIBSPRING or ROUGESPRING to save 15% by 4/24.

Taming My Wild Hair

Mitchell John Salon Champagne Thursday hair Jess Levy boston fashion style beauty blogger

Recently, the Mitchell John team invited me to come in and play hair model for the morning. I couldn’t say yes fast enough. Mitch DeRosa, salon owner, is the co-founder of one of my favorite hair care brands, Living Proof. The salon is at the forefront of cutting, styling, and hair care innovation and I was excited to check them out!

I had an appointment with Eric, the salon’s creative director. We chatted about hair, naturally. He told me about his impressive resume, which includes New York Fashion Week for some major fashion houses, bumble and bumble, Cutler Salon, and his own private salon. I told him about my decision to dye my hair pink, and the toll it takes on the health of my hair.

Because of this, he used a new line of Living Proof products on my hair. The Timeless line combats both internal and external factors that weaken hair, as well as to lock in color. Before washing my hair, he worked in a few pumps of the pre-shampoo treatment. It’s built with amino acids, proteins, and lipids to strengthen and fortify weak strands. After the treatment sat on my hair for about ten minutes, he used the shampoo and conditioner from the same line. Before drying the hair, he also used the Timeless mousse, which helps increase volume and protect against breakage when heat-styling.

He then dried and styled my hair with these wave-like curls. The final result was voluminous, and really really soft.

Check out the snaps from my visit (and pause to admire Eric’s awesome ink):

Function of Beauty: Formulated for You

function of beauty custom shampoo conditioner champagne thursday boston style fashion lifestyle blogger

I’m going to let you guys on a little secret… I dye my hair. (Shocked, right?!)

To get this color, my strands are put under a ton of abuse. I try to treat my hair really well the rest of the time to counteract the damage. I avoid heat-styling, I do a heavy-duty hair mask every week, and I am always on the hunt to find hair products that will replenish moisture and strength.

When Function of Beauty reached out to me to try their shampoo and conditioner, I was intrigued. Rather than create formulas that they think people want, they let YOU create your own custom formula. There are often individual shampoos that fit a portion of my hair-care goals but nothing that tackles everything I’m looking for. Not until I created it with Function of Beauty, that is.

Their site is simple, chic, and super easy to use. First, you build your hair profile (hair texture and scalp moisture level) and then move on to select your hair goals. This is my favorite part. No longer do I have to select between color-protection and shine. I can have both! You select up to five goals, which allows you to achieve everything you’re looking for. Another favorite feature of mine is that the active ingredients and a description for the goal pops up as you click on each one. The formulas are also free of sulfates, parabens, phthalates, and triclosan.

After you choose the formula specifications, you choose customization options like color and scent. There are some chic scent options, like white tea jasmine and grapefruit hibiscus.

The custom formulation arrived quickly. My hair profile is for fine, wavy, normal moisture hair. The hair goals I selected are: deep condition; fix split ends; hydrate; strengthen; color protection.

I was a little afraid that I wouldn’t notice a difference in my hair after switching to my custom formulation, but I definitely did. After using the products for a week, I noticed that I had more body and that I could stretch the length of time between shampoos a little bit longer. Nothing can fix split ends like a haircut, but the ends of my tresses are noticeably smoother.

This is a really unique way to shop for hair care products. Head over to Function of Beauty to create your very own custom formulation!

Thank you to Function of Beauty for sending me free product for this post! Reviews and opinions are always my own.

Vacation Prep with Waxing the City

waxing the city champagne thursday review boston beauty blogger

I know things have been a little quiet around here, but I was in California for two weeks so #sorrynotsorry. Life was insane before leaving, between getting as much done as I could at work (during our busy season no less) and packing and sterilizing my house (because coming home from a trip to a dirty house is the worst).

I get really anxious before going out of town, so I scheduled a mini beauty day to help calm my frantic mind. Getting my legs waxed is one of my favorite services to have done before going on vacation, and Waxing the City invited me to come in to try their services. continue reading
